CONDI RICE: I Shouldn’t Have Been Designer Shoe Shopping Throughout Katrina
Add Condoleeza Rice to the series of George W. Bush White House members offering their version of occasions there.
Rice’s is out with a new memoir “No Increased salvatore ferragamo sofia Honor,” which recounts her time in the White House. The following is her moderately brutal account of Katrina.
You’ll recall that on the time Rice was slammed for shopping for sneakers in NYC while New Orleans was being battered.
What’s so fascinating about this passage is how Rice, lengthy considered Bush’s most loyal adviser (and apparently this continues to be the case), seems totally to take the blame for being tone deaf while painting the president as solely caring and attentive.
“I didn’t think a lot about the dire warnings of an approaching hurricane called Katrina. … I attended a Homeland Security principals meeting on Thursday, August 30, and returned to the State Division to verify as soon as extra on plans for securing our places of work in the Gulf of Mexico. Then I flew to New York. That night, upon arriving at the Palace Resort, I flipped on the television. Certainly, the hurricane had hit New Orleans. … I known as Secretary of Homeland Security Mike Chertoff , inquiring if there was anything I might do. ‘It’s pretty bad,’ he said. We discussed the question of overseas assist briefly, but Mike was clearly in a hurry. He stated he’d call if he needed me. I hung up, got dressed, and went to see Spamalot.
“The next morning, I went shopping on the Ferragamo shoe retailer down the block from my resort, returned to the Palace … and once more turned on the tv. The airwaves were crammed with devastating footage from New Orleans. And the faces of the general public in distress had been black. I knew right away that I should never have left Washington. I referred to as my chief of employees , Brian Gunderson. ‘I’m coming dwelling,’ I stated. ‘Yeah. You’d higher try this,’ he answered. Then I called the President. “Mr. President, I’m coming again. I don’t know how much I can do, but we clearly have a race downside,’ I mentioned. ‘Yeah. Why don’t you come on back ’ he answered. I truly hadn’t expected that from the President. That’s odd, I believed. He’d been so insistent that I go and get some relaxation. He’s really worried. ‘Maybe I can go to Houston to characterize you,’ I mentioned. ‘Well, just come on back, and we are able to discuss it then,’ he replied.
“A few minutes later, my senior advisor, Jim Wilkinson, walked into my suite. ‘Boss, I should have seen this coming,’ he said. He showed me the day’s Drudge Report headline on the net: ‘Eyewitness: Sec of State Condi Rice laughs it up at “Spamalot” whereas Gulf Coast lays in tatters.’ ‘Get a aircraft up right here to take me house,’ I stated. Salvatore I … sat there kicking myself for having been so tone-deaf. I wasn’t just the secretary of state with responsibility for international affairs; I used to be the best-rating black in the administration and a key advisor to the President. What had I been pondering … Later, the administration would … reach out to Donna Brazile, an influential Democratic activist, who was a local of latest Orleans and who to today acknowledges the President’s generosity towards her hometown. We in the end determined that I’d go to Cellular in my house state of Alabama instead of Houston. It was a Sunday, so I’d have to go to church before visiting the victims of the hurricane.
