The structure was designed by The Architects’ Collaborative and was inbuilt 1983 directly above the Massachusetts Turnpike and Huntington Avenue highway interchange ramps, which had been constructed in 1964 on the positioning of the former South Finish Armory. Upon its opening, the indoor mall featured as its centerpiece a 60-foot (18 m) excessive sculptural fountain designed by Boston artist Dimitri Hadzi. The artwork was composed of multiple abstract granite and travertine marble shapes, with a waterfall cascading down it right into a shallow pool at the bottom, surrounded by marble benches. A proposed renovation which might remove the fountain prompted commentary opposing its demolition in 2013.[4] As of 2017[update], the fountain had been utterly eliminated, and the location and status of its parts have been unknown to most people.

The mall is noted for its upscale stores, including Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, John Varvatos, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Victorinox Swiss Military, Porsche Design, Tiffany & Co.Jimmy Choo, David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, and Salvatore Ferragamo. The mall had also housed one of many few main-chain owned movie theatres within Boston city limits, but the Loews Copley Place Cinemas was closed in January 2005.

The mall is related on to the Outlets at Prudential Center through a skybridge over Huntington Avenue. The mall can be connected to the ferragamo online store Back Bay MBTA station by way of an underground tunnel beneath Dartmouth Street.
