The structure was designed by The Architects’ Collaborative and was built in 1983 directly above the Massachusetts Turnpike and Huntington Avenue highway interchange ramps, which had been constructed in 1964 on the site of the former South End Armory. The Armory building had been accomplished in 1890, and was razed to make room for the Mass Pike proper-of-method.[1]

In 2011, plans for a 60,000 sq ft (5,600 m2) addition of retail house to the facility and a fifty four,000 sq ft (5,000 m2) expansion of its Neiman Marcus anchor had been approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority.[2] As of February 2013, the undertaking was awaiting ultimate design plans.[3][wants replace]

Upon its opening, the indoor mall featured as its centerpiece ferragamo mens dress shoes on sale a 60-foot (18 m) excessive sculptural fountain designed by Boston artist Dimitri Hadzi. The artwork was composed of a number of summary granite and travertine marble shapes, with a waterfall cascading down it right into a shallow pool at the bottom, surrounded by marble benches. A proposed renovation which might remove the fountain prompted commentary opposing its demolition in 2013.[4] As of 2017[replace], the fountain had been utterly removed, and the location and status of its elements were unknown to most of the people.

The mall is famous for its upscale stores, including Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, John Varvatos, Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Victorinox Swiss Military, Porsche Design, Tiffany & Co.Jimmy Choo, David Yurman, Louis Vuitton, and Salvatore Ferragamo. The mall had also housed one of the few main-chain owned movie theatres inside Boston city limits, but the Loews Copley Place Cinemas was closed in January 2005.

The mall is linked directly to the Retailers at Prudential Middle by way of a skybridge over Huntington Avenue. The mall is also related to the Back Bay MBTA station by way of an underground tunnel beneath Dartmouth Road.

The property is managed by Simon Property Group, which acquired it in the 2002 breakup of the then-Dutch owned Urban Procuring Centers, Inc.[5]
