EARLIER STORY Beneath:
Barneys New York and the brand new York Police Department have been slapped with a lawsuit by Trayon Christian, a school pupil from Queens, who was arrested at the luxury department retailer in April.
“His only crime was being a younger black man,” Michael Palillo, Christian’s attorney, instructed The brand new York Publish.
The Publish studies that the 19-year-outdated was at the store buying a $350 Salvatore Ferragamo belt, but following the acquisition, he was stopped by undercover officers that have been allegedly known as on by a Barneys gross sales clerk who believed the transaction was fraudulent.
The lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Courtroom, states that the NYC College of Know-how freshman was requested by the cops: “how a younger black man corresponding to himself may afford to purchase such an expensive belt ” He was then handcuffed and taken to an area precinct.
Regardless of displaying the officers the receipt for the belt, his ID and the debit card used, “Christian was instructed that his identification was false and that he couldn’t afford to make such an costly buy,” Palillo mentioned.
Christian, who saved up money for the dear accessory from his half-time job at faculty, said he returned the belt and never plans to shop on the Madison Avenue store once more. His story comes simply days after another instance of racial discrimination was reported in Baltimore when a black girl was allegedly fired from Hooters for having blonde highlights.
Barneys has not commented on the matter and Christian’s lawsuit in opposition to the shop and the NYPD is for unspecified damages.
