Air Travel, Swine Flu, And The Chinese Authorities
We (my husband and that i) arrived in Guangzhou, China final evening at 8:35, some 24 hours after we had left Burlington, Vermont. We’re right here to formally open the office for the Institute for Sustainable Communities, an NGO I started 18 years ago to deal with environmental issues.
That is my third journey to China. I first lead a delegation sponsored by the America-China committee to check world warming. That was in 1991, when neither the Chinese language or People have been a lot concerned about the topic. My second visit was in 1996 as a delegate to the World Conference on Girls in Beijing.
Our travel itinerary was from Burlington to Chicago, to Tokyo, to Guangzhou. The first surprise was an announcement over the airplane’s loudspeaker after we landed in Tokyo. “Please keep in your seats. A well being inspection staff shall be coming by way of the aircraft to take your temperature. We are going to distribute facemasks, which you need to put on. Lower the shades to keep the temperature down and fill out the health types that you have been given.” Till then, everything had gone in line with plan. The flights had been punctual, the service was good, and we had been expecting to land on time. Then some six inspectors filled the aisles. They have been lined head to toe in working room, blue paper scrub suits, with masking tape in the again, full with masks, boots, goggles, hats, and plastic gloves. It appeared like an invasion from outer space. There was no human communication, partly because of the masks, and partly because of the language barrier. Instantly we have been captive.
One individual held what regarded like an old fashioned sq. camera and pointed it all around. It was, little question, a thermometer. This is what H1N1 swine flue has achieved to Platåskor international travel. The ominous possibility of contamination had stuffed the airplane and the larger risk of being quarantined.
They moved very slowly by the cabin. I was conscious of their cautious pace because we had a connection to make and we were worried whether we would make it.
Happily, we have been sitting in row forty four as a result of the following announcement was “all those sitting in rows 46 and better please stay on the plane. Others may depart.”
It was then we saw a younger lady in a yellow shirt being escorted out of the aircraft. All these near her had to stay. Immediately, she was the pariah. I puzzled what happened to her.
We made our connection, grateful for our health, and daunted by Japanese precautions towards flu contagion. The world has turned regular again (nearly) as we made the long stroll to the gate, passing an array of excessive end airport shops, including Cartier’s, Ferragamo, Hermes and Tiffany. When we arrived in China, we were inspected once again, only the process was rather more informal. Uniformed airline officials came on board and held a small infra red mild, which they pointed at our foreheads. Another form of thermometer.
Passing by way of immigration was surprisingly simple. The airport was new, shiny, and large. We were greeted by our staff person and arrived on the Backyard Hotel, an elegant equal of a 4-star lodge.
